NOTE TO CLIENTS: Skill levels and prices can vary considerably, so we offer these suggestions when selecting a calligrapher:
1) Ask to view sample photos., similar to the type of work you need. For unique commissions, visit the calligrapher's website or ask to see the calligrapher's portfolio.
2) Contact several calligraphers for a cost estimate for your particular job.
3) Make sure when working with a calligrapher that you provide any materials (if needed) in a timely fashion and are accessible to correspond with them, regarding your project. Many calligraphers have very busy schedule. If the client delays sending materials or responding to inquiries from the calligrapher this can not only cause delays with your project but may even inccur additional rush fees.
4) Regarding your work agreement, be specific in the following areas: *Fees (breakdown of charges) *Turnaround Time/Completion date *Delivery/ Pickup options *Minimum quantities necessary for the job *Materials that will be used (ink, colors, paper, etc.). *Who will supply materials

For any commissioned work, ensure that the text provided to the calligrapher is legible and worded exactly as you want it to appear, double check spelling for accuracy. It helps if you have a sense of the style you would like for your project. Some calligraphers are also painters and illustrators and can assist with more detailed requests.. Plan ahead! It helps things to run smoothly if you allow enough time for detailed discussions regarding your project, deciding and then finalizing the style, agreement of the contract details and signatures, and sending roughs for you to proof (if the calligrapher offers this service). Calligraphy is done by hand so please allow ample time for the completion of your project and for some short rest for the calligraphers hand fatigue! :>) It's an industry standard to provide approx. 15% extra of the materials you wish to have calligraphy on, eg; envelopes , place cards, etc. as a courtesy to the calligrapher, as mistakes can occur, papers need be tested to see how the nib may react, additional guests may need to be added, etc. Any corrections to guest lists are normally considered additions and are usually charged accordingly.
